IBDP Chinese B

Master IBDP Chinese B at BILI: Courses for Standard & Higher Level

Empower your IB Diploma journey with our specialized Chinese B courses. Designed for students with prior Mandarin experience, our program builds fluent communicators and culturally-aware global thinkers, fully aligned with the International Baccalaureate curriculum.

Course Overview: Choose Your Pathway

Both IB Chinese B SL and HL develop language skills through five core themes: Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organization, and Sharing the Planet. The main differences lie in the depth of study, the inclusion of literature at HL, and the expected level of competency.

IB Chinese B Standard Level (SL)

  • Recommended Hours: 150 teaching hours
  • Student Profile: For students with 2-5 years of experience. Focuses on effective communication in familiar and some unfamiliar contexts.
  • Key Differentiator: Develops clear communication for practical and social use. The Individual Oral assessment is based on a visual stimulus.

IB Chinese B Higher Level (HL)

  • Recommended Hours: 240 teaching hours
  • Student Profile: For students with 4-6+ years of experience. Aims for fluency and analytical ability in a wide range of contexts.
  • Key Differentiator: Requires study of two literary works (e.g., novels, plays). The Individual Oral assessment includes discussion on an extract from one of these works. Demands deeper critical thinking and broader vocabulary.

Assessment Structure & Preparation

Success in IB Chinese B requires balanced skills across writing, reading, listening, and speaking. The assessment weightings are the same for SL and HL, though HL exams are longer and expectations higher.

  • Paper 1: Writing (25%)
    • Task: Produce one written piece (e.g., letter, article, blog) in response to a choice of prompts.
    • Our Focus: Mastering text-type conventions, essay structure, and thematic vocabulary.
  • Paper 2: Listening & Reading (50%)
    • Task: Comprehension exercises based on authentic audio recordings and written texts.
    • Our Focus: Building skills for inference, gist, and detail comprehension using diverse materials.
  • Individual Oral (25%)
    • Task: A 12-15 minute assessed conversation. For SL, it begins with a description and discussion of a visual stimulus. For HL, it starts with a discussion on an extract from a studied literary work.
    • Our Focus: Developing spontaneous speaking fluency, presentation skills, and the ability to engage in thematic discussion.

Our Teaching Methodology: Beyond the Textbook

At BILI, we prepare students for these assessments through a dynamic, immersive approach:

  • Theme-Based Immersion: All lessons and materials are structured around the five prescribed themes, helping students build relevant vocabulary and conceptual understanding.
  • Skill-Specific Workshops: Regular sessions dedicated to exam techniques, literary analysis (for HL), and oral presentation skills.
  • Authentic Materials: Use of news articles, podcasts, films, and literature to expose students to real-world language and cultural contexts.
  • Mock Examinations & Feedback: Simulated exams under timed conditions followed by detailed, criterion-based feedback to track progress.
